NCAR has begun developing its next strategic plan. Our planning process will take place over the next 6 - 9 months. The end result will be a short document that describes our major areas of activity and priorities for the period 2014 – 2019. We view this planning exercise as an update and refinement of our current Strategic Plan, rather than major change of direction.
The Planning Council includes members of the NCAR staff and university scientists is developing the plan. As part of this process, the council is reviewing ideas and suggestions from NCAR laboratories and programs, and strategies from the National Science Foundation and other sponsors and the National Research Council. They are also examining relevant interagency and international documents, including reports and strategies from the U.S. Global Change Research program, the World Climate Research Program, the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
The planning council is very interested in receiving ideas and suggestions from members of the scientific community and other NCAR stakeholders. If you wish to provide suggestions about scientific opportunities and priorities that NCAR should consider, you can email them to plansuggestions@ucar.edu or submit them to Peter Backlund or Joe Tribbia.
We also plan to hold open houses at the upcoming AGU, AMS, and AAAS meetings, so please feel free to attend and make suggestions in person. Dates, times and room numbers will be posted on this site as soon as that information is available.
We aim to complete a first draft of our new plan in early 2013. The first draft and subsequent drafts will be posted on this site for review and comment.
