Ron McPherson an AMS Member, a Fellow of the AMS, and the AMS President for 1997, is Executive Director Emeritus of the American Meteorological Society, which is headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts. He served as Executive Director from 1999 to 2004.

After stepping down as Executive Director, he continued to serve AMS from its Washington, D.C. office. Although Dr. McPherson retired in 2009, he continues to serve AMS as a volunteer. Prior to joining AMS, Dr. McPherson served for nearly 40 years with NOAA's National Weather Service. During his last eight years at NWS he was Director of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction, with responsibility for overall management of the nine centers comprising NCEP, including scientific and technical leadership, budget issues, personnel, and policy. Earlier, Dr. McPherson served as Deputy Director of the National Weather Service.

Dr. McPherson has published extensively in scientific journals including the Journal of Applied Meteorology, Monthly Weather Review, and the Bulletin of American Meteorological Society. He earned the Department of Commerce Silver Medal and the Presidential Rank Award as an outstanding executive. Dr. McPherson has a bachelors in meteorology, a masters in environmental engineering, and a Ph.D. degree in atmospheric sciences from the University of Texas at Austin.
