Walter Dabberdt, an AMS Member, a Fellow of the AMS, and the AMS President for 2008, is Corporate Science Adviser for Vaisala Group. He is based at Vaisala's Boulder Operations facility in Louisville, Colorado.

Dr. Dabberdt has a BS degree in marine transportation and meteorology from the State University of New York Maritime College and MS and PhD degrees in meteorology from the University of Wisconsin—Madison. He spent 15 years at Stanford Research Institute as senior research meteorologist and 15 years at UCAR's National Center for Atmospheric Research as scientist, facility manager, and NCAR Associate Director.

Since 2000 he has been the Corporate Science Adviser (currently), Chief Science Officer  and Director of Strategic Research for the Vaisala Group. Dr. Dabberdt was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the U.S. National Research Council and a research fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany. His professional interests and experience include terrestrial observing systems, boundary-layer and mesoscale meteorology, air quality, and urban-scale meteorology and dispersion.

He has served on numerous national and international panels and committees, as: a member of the National Academy of Sciences' Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate (BASC); Board Chair of the Environmental Prediction in Canadian Cities (EPiCC) research program; Chair of the Industrial Advisory Board of the multi-university Collaborative and Adaptive Sensing of the Atmosphere (CASA) Engineering Research Center; Chair of the NCAR Earth Observing Laboratory's External Advisory Committee; member of the International Science Steering Committee for the WMO GURME Shanghai Air Quality Forecasting Program; Co-Chair of the NOAA Science Advisory Board Environmental Information Services Working Group; member of the NCAR Director's Advisory Committee; and member of the Dean's Advisory Board to the College of Engineering at Colorado State University. Dr. Dabberdt is a Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society.

He has been recognized as a lifetime National Associate of the National Research Council of the National Academies.
