Interns at a poster session

What's the difference between a student assistantship and a research internship?

While a student assistant may analyze data, do field work, or support scientific research in other ways, an intern does a project that they design and execute with guidance and with deliverables such as a poster and talk. Internships have mentors who work closely with interns, and often have several students who develop a sense of being in a cohort through team-building, field trips, and other activities. Internships typically provide training in communicating results, résumé writing, and looking at career options. Workshops will be hosted by Valerie Sloan, A.J. Lauer, an other experts within the organization.

Resources for Internship Managers

Providing students with smooth on-ramping helps them to function better in doing research. The NCAR Education and Outreach Office will support labs and programs with guidance on the following:

A work plan & communication plan: Encourage your mentors and interns to work together to make a communication and work plan, with milestones

View a Google calendar: See workshops dates and locations and copy to your calendar

Preparing your mentors:  Share these Tips for intership mentors and these resources with your mentors.

One-day Leadership Training:  View the Agenda of the training that will be in the Fleischmann Building at the Mesa Lab

Evaluation:  The NCAR Education & Outreach team will conduct an evaluation of all internship programs with a post-internship survey that each internship can add questions to. See the 2017 NCAR intern survey results

Summer housing at CU Boulder:  NCAR|UCAR houses many of our interns at Bear Creek Apartments

Ethics, Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR), and sexual harassment training: Interns will receive these trainings during their on-boarding process as employees of NCAR through Human Resources
