Three Research Divisions Become NCAR Labs

To meet the goals and objectives outlined in the NCAR strategic plan, the NCAR Earth System Laboratory (NESL) was dissolved on March 1, 2015, and its three internationally respected research divisions became the following three NCAR laboratories:

Atmospheric Observations & Modeling Laboratory (ACOM)

Climate and Global Dynamics Laboratory (CGD)

Mesoscale and Microscale Meteorology Laboratory (MMM)

In addition to providing significant net savings to the organization, the change implemented a more horizontal management model that maps onto the organizational structure of the National Science Foundation's Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences. The decision was made in consultation with NSF AGS, the UCAR Board of Trustees, and the NCAR Executive Committee.
