Earth system predictability across timescales, including understanding and prediction of extreme weather and climate change impacts, is one of society’s most pressing needs. 

NSF NCAR is hosting the workshop to develop a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach that builds on the center’s community partnerships and informs its strategic direction.

Dates: April 10-12, 2024 (Friday, April 12, will wrap up mid-day)

Poster Sessions

We’re looking for participants who are, or who want to be, engaged in answering frontier science questions related to Earth system predictability from across disciplines and have interest in partnering with NSF NCAR in this research. 

Workshop Details

Scope

The workshop will focus on predictability and prediction across the Earth system, including the Sun (atmosphere, ocean, land, sea ice, land-ice, geospace, terrestrial and marine ecosystems) spanning timescales of minutes to days, subseasonal to seasonal, seasonal to decades, and decades to centuries.

Workshop participants will establish and identify:

  • Key scientific questions
  • Needs for community modeling and analysis tools
  • Opportunities for better integration of observations and modeling
  • Path forward for integrating artificial intelligence and machine learning approaches
  • Partnership opportunities with academic, agency, and user communities

Participants should attend the entire workshop to ensure a productive, results-driven outcome that incorporates needs from across the community.

Ground Transportation 

Once you land in Denver, there are several ground transportation options available to you. You can choose to book an airport shuttle with Eight Black or Super Shuttle. Another option is the Regional Transportation District (RTD) where you can catch a local bus at the airport and it will take you directly to Boulder.

RTD Airport Bus to Boulder: Tickets are $10 each way; tickets can be purchased with card or cash at kiosks at the Transit Center located under the Westin; tickets also can be purchased on the bus with exact change on the bus.
Eight Black Airport Shuttle: $56 one-way rate agreement with UCAR

Water and Elevation 

Keep in mind that Boulder sits at 5,318 feet. If you are coming from a lower elevation, please be aware some people can experience altitude sickness, which causes headaches, fatigue, and dizziness. Staying hydrated helps with these symptoms, especially if you drink extra water before arrival. There will be water at the workshop; please consider bringing a reusable bottle with a lid for your visit.
