Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing scientific discovery, allowing researchers to make new progress on historically intractable problems. We are focused on building shared AI capabilities with and for the Earth system science community. This includes leading the development and stewardship of a range of AI-driven tools and products that support hybrid modeling, large-scale emulation, model evaluation, and more while maintaining scientific rigor and reproducibility. We also provide the research community with curated, AI-ready Earth system science datasets and advanced computing infrastructure, enabling reproducible, high-throughput experimentation.

NSF NCAR is committed to ensuring that AI use is responsible, reliable, and transparent and that  the Earth system science community is literate in AI fundamentals and skilled in Earth system science applications. Our in-house researchers are integrating AI with observations, data assimilation, and physics-based models to uncover hidden patterns, accelerate discovery, and expand the limits of predictability.
