NSF NCAR

A pilot collaboration between NSF NCAR and MSI faculty to support teaching loads and create time to build or strengthen research collaborations with NSF NCAR scientists.

Program Overview 

The NSF NCAR Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) office, in collaboration with the Education Engagement and Early Career Development Center (EdEC), is co-developing a teaching exchange program with faculty at minority-serving institutions (MSIs). Now in its pilot phase, the program is called Engaging Scientists in Teaching, Training, and Learning Efforts (ESTTLE). 

The program matches faculty with NSF NCAR scientists to support teaching loads through guest lectures, seminar series, or co-teaching a course. 

MSI faculty can request to work with specific staff or share the topic area they need covered, and the project team will assist in finding a good match. Priority will be given to faculty who show how this opportunity might lead to development or expansion of research collaborations with NSF NCAR. Reviewers will also consider alignment of content with scientist expertise as well as any budget constraints.

Program Impact

  • Build skills for the next generation of scientists to teach courses, develop curriculum, mentor students, and engage in opportunities for future teaching careers at the college/university level. 
  • Build trust with the university community, in particular Minority Serving Institutions, towards future research collaborations, and student involvement in NSF NCAR programs. 
  • Connect NSF NCAR scientists with faculty at 2-4 year colleges and universities to build a network for future research collaborations.
  • Strengthen confidence of early career scientists and postdoctoral fellows in their ability to communicate scientific concepts through teaching opportunities.

Collaboration Opportunities 

NSF NCAR scientists will collaborate with MSI faculty to:

  • Establish norms and expectations as co-facilitators of the course
  • Determine whether in-person or virtual options work best for this opportunity
  • Share lectures as agreed upon, ahead of the lecture dates
  • Connect and have open communication

  • Faculty can request more than one scientist to participate

Seminar Series

Co-Teaching Lectureship (university co-sponsorship)

  • Co-teach 50% of the course, with university/college contributing financial support
  • Course content will be based on the needs of the faculty and the expertise available by the NSF NCAR scientist

Eligibility Information

Who can submit a request?

Faculty from Minority Serving Institutions from the United States (U.S.) and U.S. territories are eligible to submit a request.

Can the NCAR scientist take the lead for my full course?

Currently, requests require a faculty member to be the lead for the course, though MSI faculty can request co-teaching support.
